How to clean and maintain a ceramic ventilated façade after installation
The installation of ceramic ventilated façades often leads to the accumulation of material residues and dirt on the surface. Therefore, once the assembly is completed, whether for a new construction or a renovation, it is advisable to perform a thorough cleaning of the cladding. Here, we highlight the key points for carrying it out successfully, as well as the necessary maintenance tasks to keep a ceramic façade in perfect condition.
Can a ventilated façade be cleaned with a pressure washer?
Not only can you, but it is recommended to use this pressure cleaning method to deeply sanitize the surface and remove any construction residues. A pressure washer is an effective and highly useful machine for cleaning the façade.
To facilitate the removal of dust, a cement remover detergent can be diluted at a 1:1000 ratio—10 ml of product in 10 liters of water. Additionally, to ensure all construction residues are removed and the best results achieved, façade maintenance experts recommend:
- Using a hard plastic-bristle brush.
- Following a specific cleaning order: start from the top of the façade and work your way down.
How is subsequent maintenance carried out on the ventilated façade?
Ventilated façades are a type of building envelope known for their numerous qualities and benefits. Regarding upkeep, ceramic façades are particularly attractive due to their low maintenance requirements.
In addition to the initial cleaning after installation, ongoing maintenance should be performed as needed, depending on the façade’s exposure to dirt-inducing agents. During this maintenance process, it is also important to:
- Check for cracks or fissures.
- Inspect the joints and the air chamber.
- Ensure the ventilation system is functioning correctly.
One advantage of maintaining a ventilated façade with GA16 pieces is that individual tiles can be replaced without major work or affecting adjacent pieces, as the GA16 ceramic piece is designed to be easily accessible.
Periodic cleaning of the ventilated façade
Ventilated façades stand out for their multiple benefits, including their low maintenance requirements.
However, direct exposure to atmospheric conditions such as environmental pollution, vapors, gases, liquids, or elements from both the building and its surroundings can lead to dirt deposits that affect the appearance of the façade. The frequency of cleaning will depend on the level of dirt and pollution in the area.
That said, it is advisable to evaluate every five years whether a thorough cleaning of the ceramic façade is necessary, especially for buildings in highly polluted areas.
In any case, FAVEKER® ceramic tiles (GA16, GA20, and GA30) are characterized by optimal stain resistance and chemical resistance as per UNE-EN-ISO 10545-14 and UNE-EN-ISO 10545-13 standards, respectively.
If cleaning is deemed necessary, it should be carried out following these guidelines:
- Clean with a pressure washer using a solution of water and neutral detergent.
- For stubborn stains, specific cleaning products can be applied.
- Before using any product, test it on a small area of the façade.
